Global Executives Say Companies Should Be Measured by Their Societal Purpose, According to New Deloitte Survey

At the World Economic Forum 2012, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited (DTTL) will share the results of a global survey exploring business leaders' attitudes on the purpose, impact, and leadership of business on society. The survey, sponsored by DTTL and conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), found that more than three quarters of the respondents (76%) believe that the value of a company should be measured by the positive contribution its core business makes to society, as well as by its profits.

Vodacom launches Mobile Education Programme

In a move that will pave the way to improving education in schools, technology partners launched the Vodacom Mobile Education Programme, which makes use of mobile technology to provide teachers throughout South Africa with better access to quality instruction resources and ICT. The initiative is a nationwide teacher development programme that improves the quality of instruction in all subjects, especially mathematics and physical science, two of the most challenging subjects for learners in South Africa.

A new report on Uganda’s emerging oil and gas industry says companies can improve their corporate social responsibility (CSR) to give fairer employment, compensation and land deals to communities. The report Seeking Benefits and Avoiding Conflicts: A Community-Company Assessment of Uganda's Hydrocarbon Industry is the culmination of a year of consultation, validation discussions, roundtables and workshops, conducted by the Ugandan members of the study team and coordinated by the Civil Society Coalition on Oil and Gas (CSCO). The University of Leeds provided overall project support and leadership. Business-Community Synergies (BCS) provided training and guidance on the methodology.

IKEA Soft Toys for Education Campaign Raises $16.2 Million* (€12.4 Million) for UNICEF and Save the Children

IKEA customers and co-workers have partnered with the IKEA Foundation on a $16.2 million (€12.4) million gift for UNICEF and Save the Children projects to help realise every child's right to a quality education. Thanks to this donation, UNICEF and Save the Children will implement 18 projects in 16 countries. UNICEF’s share will go to the Schools for Africa projects in seven countries and two projects in Russia and China. Save the Children’s equal share will support education for children in some of the most marginalized groups (minorities and children with disabilities) in Asia (Bangladesh, China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines) and Eastern Europe (Lithuania and Romania).

Vodacom Launches Phase 1 of National Library of South Africa Connectivity Project

Vodacom announced the successful implementation of Phase 1 of a libraries project for internet connectivity across three provinces - North West, Limpopo and Mpumalanga. When completed, almost 300 community libraries will be connected using VSAT and Vodacom ADSL services.
